Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver has spoken out for the first time regarding his attempt to secure a trade to Geelong last year.
He has acknowledged that he “wasn’t the best teammate” during a challenging 18-month period that raised concerns about his welfare and future within the sport.
At 27, Oliver’s journey has been a tumultuous one since playing a key role in the Demons’ 2021 AFL premiership victory.
Personal issues and inconsistent performance saw him on the verge of being traded at the conclusion of the 2023 season, and the situation reemerged at the close of the previous season.
After hearing that the Demons were exploring trade options for him, Oliver took the initiative to travel to Geelong to engage with the Cats’ decision-makers.

“I was informed that I was on the trade table, with various things happening that I can understand,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
“I earn a decent sum to compete at a high level, and I recognise I wasn’t delivering on that.”
The ongoing saga surrounding Oliver took centre stage during the 2024 trade period, capturing attention until Melbourne’s list manager Tim Lamb put a stop to the speculation at a tense press conference.
It’s now come to light that an emotional phone call with Demons president Brad Green was instrumental in Oliver’s decision to remain with the club.
“It was probably the first time I truly felt that way,” Oliver remarked.
“Especially from someone so high up who offered their support.”
“I know I wasn’t the best teammate or person at the club, so I can understand the situation.”
“Melbourne’s goal is to win premierships, and that’s what football is about. We’re here to make history and be a competitive team. When one of your star players isn’t performing, it’s not their fault. That’s just how things unfolded, and ultimately, I’m glad to still be with Melbourne.”
Oliver showcased his sharp form last week, notching up 28 disposals and three goals during a pre-season match against Fremantle.
