Phil Mickelson has recently taken a swing at Fred Couples in a now-removed social media post, following remarks about a possible defection by Brooks Koepka.
Koepka, a five-time major champion, made headlines after visiting the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL), an innovative indoor league that has lured many of the PGA Tour’s top talents.
While Koepka currently has a lucrative contract with LIV Golf, Couples indicated that he has shown interest in potentially rejoining the PGA Tour down the line.

“I speak with Brooks Koepka regularly. I have great affection for Brooks Koepka, and I’m not going to add anything more other than the fact that I talk to him frequently,” Couples revealed on radio station KJR 9.33 FM.
“He wants to come back. I genuinely believe he has a strong desire to return.”
Mickelson, however, did not take kindly to these remarks, seeing them as an infringement on Koepka’s personal aspirations and autonomy regarding his future with the Tour.
“If this isn’t accurate, he has compromised a relationship that he values,” Mickelson posted on X.
“If it is true, he has undermined Brooks’ ability to manage his own narrative and timeline.
“Regardless of the truth, this is a petty and classless move by Fred.”
This isn’t the first instance where the two have had back-and-forth exchanges, with Couples previously criticising Mickelson’s sizeable contract with LIV in 2023.
“If someone is willing to pay Phil Mickelson $200 million (approximately $320 million AUD) at the age of 53 just to shoot scores of 74 and 75, then good luck to them,” he had commented at the time.
Both former champions are expected to share the same venue next month during the annual gathering at The Masters.
Mickelson won the prestigious event in 2004, 2006, and 2010, while Couples claimed the title in 1992.
