Jose Mourinho has launched legal action against Galatasaray following their allegations of his racist remarks, as confirmed by his current club Fenerbahce on Friday.
Fenerbahce announced in a statement that Mourinho is seeking 1,907,000 Turkish lira ($52,223) in damages for “an assault on his personal rights” as a result of these accusations against the esteemed Portuguese manager.
While the club did not elaborate further, the lawsuit comes in the wake of the Istanbul derby that took place on Monday between the two rival teams.
In the aftermath of the goalless encounter, Galatasaray claimed Mourinho made offensive comments and indicated they would pursue criminal charges against him.
During the post-match press conference, Mourinho remarked that the Galatasaray bench was “jumping like monkeys” and suggested that the match could have ended disastrously had a Turkish referee officiated the game.
In response to his comments, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) handed Mourinho a four-match suspension.
The TFF’s decision was based on “derogatory and offensive statements,” along with allegations regarding turmoil in Turkish football.
Upon being approached for a response, a spokesperson from Galatasaray indicated that they had already initiated legal proceedings against Mourinho and offered no further remarks.
