UEFA, the governing body for European football, has imposed a ban on disgraced former Premier League referee David Coote, preventing him from officiating until June 2026.
The 42-year-old was dismissed by Premier League Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) in December after a video surfaced in which he made disparaging remarks about Liverpool and their ex-manager Jurgen Klopp.
Following this, another video appeared showing Coote inhaling a white substance, allegedly during Euro 2024. PGMOL stated that Coote had severely breached his employment contract, rendering his position “untenable”.
Last week, UEFA’s control, ethics and disciplinary panel convened and concluded that Coote had breached essential standards of conduct and brought the game, particularly UEFA, into disrepute.
In January, Coote revealed in an interview that he is gay, expressing that the pressure of concealing his sexuality had led to poor decisions, including the derogatory remarks about Liverpool and his drug use.
He expressed sincere regret for the harm his actions may have caused.
