The jubilant supporters at Anfield on Wednesday celebrated as though they were witnessing the birth of a Premier League title, yet Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot and his squad remained grounded in what has been a remarkable season, albeit one that is far from complete.
The league leaders surged 13 points clear at the pinnacle of the standings following their 2-0 triumph over Newcastle United, with rain unable to dull the celebratory atmosphere of the fans.
When posed with the question of when he might see a hint of light at the end of the tunnel, Slot responded: “Absolutely, there’s still a long path ahead, 10 matches to go, plus the (League Cup) final, and two crucial fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain. Thus, we’re not looking too far ahead.”
“Right now, the players have a couple of days off, and come Saturday, we’ll shift our focus to Paris Saint-Germain rather than fixate on the Premier League table.”
Liverpool, having topped the Champions League group after the initial eight matches, will travel to Paris for the first leg of their last-16 clash against PSG next Wednesday.
Slot’s squad has demonstrated remarkable consistency, remaining unbeaten in 27 of their 28 league encounters this season. Wednesday’s win marked their 32nd victory in 43 matches across all competitions, making them the club with the most wins among Europe’s elite five leagues.
The goals that secured victory over Newcastle came from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, with Szoboszlai echoing Slot’s sentiments that there’s no time for complacency just yet.
“Once it’s mathematically impossible for them (Arsenal) to catch us,” the midfielder remarked. “We’re genuinely pleased to be 13 points ahead, but our focus is solely on ourselves. There’s the Champions League around the corner, so we must keep our attention on that as well. We aim to remain at the top of the table.”
When asked about the prospect of lifting multiple trophies this season, the Hungarian was cautious with his words.
“Upon joining Liverpool, my goal was to win everything in my first season, so I prefer not to speak about it,” Szoboszlai stated. “First, we need to get ready for the Champions League match, then prepare for a Premier League game, followed by a cup final against a challenging opponent (League Cup final on March 16 against Newcastle).
“We must be prepared and concentrate on the Champions League first, and then the final afterwards.”
