Former Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba and his Ghanaian ex-Chelsea team-mate Michael Essien rallied behind their former manager Jose Mourinho on Wednesday after the Turkish club Galatasaray accused him of making racist comments.
Galatasaray announced it would pursue legal action against the Fenerbahce manager following a league match that ended in a draw, during which the 62-year-old remarked that the home bench had been “jumping like monkeys.”
In response, Fenerbahce defended Mourinho, stating that the Portuguese coach’s words had been “taken out of context” and “intentionally misconstrued.”
Drogba, who was Chelsea’s record transfer when he joined the club in 2004 and played a pivotal role under Mourinho during their consecutive Premier League title wins, expressed his support on X.
“I’ve seen the recent comments regarding Jose Mourinho. I can assure you that I have known Jose for 25 years, and he is not a racist; the evidence is all around us,” Drogba posted, having also represented Galatasaray later in his career. He added: “How can my ‘Dad’ be a racist?”
Essien also took to social media in defence of his former coach, sharing an old photo of himself and Drogba with Mourinho on both X and Instagram, accompanied by three heart emojis.
