Jarrod Bowen, the captain of West Ham, expressed his jubilation after scoring the decisive goal against Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.
Bowen netted the sole goal in a hard-fought 1-0 victory, while Arsenal ended the contest with only 10 players due to Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card.
“It was a fantastic team effort, everyone contributed, including those who came off the bench,” he said with a smile.
“I mentioned in the huddle before kick-off that we believed we could come here and secure a win, as we’ve done in the past. Arsenal are a formidable side, but we were confident that if we put in a solid performance, we would walk away with the three points, and that’s exactly what we achieved. I believe that showed on the pitch today.
“By the end, the players were utterly spent, but that’s the level of commitment required in the Premier League to earn three points for this club. Many would have written us off before kick-off, but not us in the dressing room.
“Now, it’s vital we build on this success. We have a crucial match on Thursday at home, so we need to carry today’s momentum into that encounter.
“It will be a different challenge, but a tough one in its own right. Today has set the benchmark. That’s the standard we must strive for in every match.”
This goal marked Bowen’s 50th in the Premier League for West Ham.
“I honestly never expected to play in the Premier League, so to sit here and say that I’ve scored 50 goals is truly a remarkable achievement,” Bowen reflected.
“If I had missed that chance, I would have been haunted by it. It was a bit tense towards the end, but goals are even more satisfying when they come with a vital win.
“I always tell Mick (Michail Antonio) that I’m chasing his record, and we share a few laughs about it. He probably won’t be too pleased that I’m closing in on him, and now my next goal is to hit 100.”
