Atletico Madrid halted Valencia’s impressive run of three consecutive home victories with a convincing 3-0 win in the early evening La Liga clash, momentarily propelling themselves to the top of the table and heightening Valencia’s risk of facing their first relegation since 1986.
The visitors wasted no time, netting the opening goal just 12 minutes into the match as Julian Alvarez capitalised on Antoine Griezmann’s shot, which struck the crossbar, deftly putting it away with a precise finish into the top corner from close range.
Alvarez, affectionately called “Spider” back home, extended Atletico’s lead to two goals at the 30-minute mark, with Griezmann once again setting him up for a headed finish at the back post.
In fact, Alvarez could have completed a hat-trick before the break, but Giorgi Mamardashvili’s outstanding goalkeeping denied him after he rushed out one-on-one, forcing Alvarez to shoot wide. Valencia, on the other hand, struggled to create chances in the first half, with Umar Sadiq squandering their best opportunity by heading wide from a well-placed free-kick.

Despite suffering a heavy defeat in the first half, Valencia started the second period briskly, nearly pulling one back through substitute Hugo Duro, whose header went just wide after connecting with a cross from Jose Gaya. The hosts kept pressing and came close again when Andre Almeida, also a substitute, struck Sadiq’s lay-off fiercely towards the bottom corner, only for the ball to skim just past the post.
Atletico appeared content to absorb the late pressure, and they seized the opportunity to score a third as the match approached its final moments.
Counter-attacking swiftly, substitute Angel Correa slotted the ball into the bottom corner, securing a scoreline that mirrored their previous encounter and delivering a comprehensive league double over a struggling side that once stood shoulder-to-shoulder with them in Spanish football.
In a masterclass of effectiveness, the Rojiblancos not only claimed victory but also avoided suffering back-to-back away league defeats to Valencia for the first time during Diego Simeone’s tenure. Furthermore, they celebrated their second win in six La Liga matches.
While the hosts showed commendable spirit in the second half, they ultimately remain trapped in the relegation zone following yet another disappointing defeat.
