After an incredibly hectic off-season, the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship is set to kick off this weekend with the much-anticipated Thrifty Sydney 500.
If the exciting livery launches by the teams or the stunning Sydney Harbour Bridge crossing earlier this month weren’t enough to rile up the Supercars fans, the thrill of night racing at Sydney Motorsport Park will surely do the trick.
As the season opener for an extended 13-round championship, the first two races will see the country’s top drivers compete under the shimmering night sky this Friday and Saturday evenings, culminating in the weekend’s third and final race on Sunday afternoon.
This season, Supercars promises to introduce some thrilling and innovative changes.
Firstly, this weekend will provide all teams and drivers with the chance to test the new Dunlop tyre construction in race conditions.
Secondly, 2025 marks the inaugural year for a three-part season structure, beginning with the first eight rounds forming a Sprint Cup, followed by a two-round Endurance Cup, leading into a brand-new Finals format that will conclude with a four-way showdown to crown the champion in Adelaide.
The pre-season has sparked considerable discussion, highlighted by the notable transfer of 2023 Champion Brodie Kostecki, who has moved from Erebus Motorsport to Dick Johnson Racing.
The West Australian will take the place of the talented Anton De Pasquale, who has joined his former Erebus teammate David Reynolds at Team 18, with Cooper Murray stepping into Kostecki’s former seat.
Although Murray has already made his Supercars debut, this weekend signifies his first round as a full-season driver—a distinction also shared by Kai Allen, who will be teaming with Matthew Payne at Grove Racing.
Allen’s arrival at Grove Racing has paved the way for Richie Stanaway to take over from the retiring Tim Slade at PremiAir Racing.
There’s much to anticipate, with a variety of support categories also kicking off their seasons at the Thrifty Sydney 500, including the Super2 Series, V8 SuperUte Series, Touring Car Masters, and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia from 21-23 February.
