Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and current head coach Ruben Amorim were present at the funeral of the club’s iconic striker Denis Law on Tuesday.
Law, the only Scottish player to have ever won the Ballon d’Or, passed away at the age of 84 on January 17th.
Throughout his illustrious career, Law graced both Manchester clubs, as well as had stints with Huddersfield and Torino.
However, it was at Old Trafford that he cemented his legacy, scoring 237 goals in 404 appearances, making him the club’s third-highest goalscorer, trailing only Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton.
Law shares the record for 30 international goals for Scotland with Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, who was also in attendance at Manchester Cathedral.
“Denis Law was one of the greatest players to ever don the Manchester United shirt,” Ferguson remarked. “It doesn’t matter the era, his greatness transcends time.”
“Pele once said if there was any British player who could play for Brazil, it would be Denis Law. That alone is a tremendous accolade considering the caliber of player Pele was.”
Current team captains Bruno Fernandes and Maya Le Tissier represented the men’s and women’s squads respectively, alongside chief executive Omar Berrada.
A host of United legends, including Bryan Robson, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Peter Schmeichel, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, also paid their respects at the service.
As the funeral procession moved past Old Trafford, hundreds of supporters gathered to honour the legendary player, whose achievements are commemorated by two statues outside the stadium, before the cortege made its way into Manchester’s city centre.
“How many statues are there at Old Trafford? He has two,” Schmeichel noted. “Only the King has that honour.”
A condolence book was made available for supporters, and flags flew at half-mast in honour of one of the club’s all-time greats.
