Wellington Phoenix have made an impressive move by securing a loan deal for former Sporting CP attacking midfielder Francisco ‘Chico’ Geraldes for the remainder of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
Geraldes joins the Phoenix following his time at Malaysian powerhouse Johor Darul Ta’zim, where he featured in five matches this season before being loaned out to CD Eldense in Spain’s Segunda División.
The 29-year-old comes with a wealth of experience, having risen through the ranks of Sporting’s renowned youth academy, which has produced legendary players such as Cristiano Ronaldo.

During his time at Sporting, Geraldes played alongside notable figures such as Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, former Manchester City and Barcelona star Joao Cancelo, and Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha, accumulating 15 senior appearances after 71 matches with the club’s B team.
The ex-Portugal youth international has also had spells with German side Eintracht Frankfurt, Greek club AEK Athens, and Baniyas in the UAE.
“In terms of quality, he exceeds what I had hoped to secure during this transfer window,” said Phoenix head coach Giancarlo Italiano.
“Chico is the creative playmaker we require. He can perform as a No. 8 or a No. 10, yet he has been most impactful playing further forward.”
“He’s been training with his previous loan club in Spain, so he’s still in good shape, and I’m optimistic he’ll adapt quickly after a week with us.”
“Adjusting to the pace of the A-League may take a little while, given its faster transitional play, but once he finds his rhythm, I anticipate he’ll be an invaluable player for us.”

Geraldes made his Sporting debut in 2017 under the management of Jorge Jesus.
A year prior, he had also represented Portugal’s Under-21 side, playing alongside talents like Fernandes, Diogo Jota, Goncalo Guedes, and Ruben Neves.
While with Johor in Malaysia, he clinched the 2024 Malaysia FA Cup and previously won the 2016-17 Taca da Liga with Moreirense in Portugal.
“I believe this is the ideal place for me,” said Geraldes. “I am eager to play and contribute to the Phoenix’s ambitions.”
“The team’s success is paramount. I aim to help the Phoenix gain more points and reach the finals.”
“On a personal note, I wish to rediscover my joy in football. I feel welcomed here in Wellington, as everyone is incredibly friendly and kind, making me feel at home already.”
Geraldes further stated: “My primary attributes are my passing accuracy, ability to assist goals, and creativity on the field. That’s what Giancarlo expects from me.”
“These represent my core strengths, and I always prioritise the team’s objectives. I am confident I can contribute positively to the Phoenix and assist in its growth. With the trust of the coaching staff, I believe the rest will follow.”
“The key is to maintain a positive mindset, train diligently, and the results will inevitably come. I am certain of that.”
