The Board of Motorsport Australia has given the green light to revised concussion protocols, following recommendations from the National Medical Advisory Committee (NMAC).
Set to be introduced in 2025, the Concussion Management Guidelines advocate for the widely accepted use of the Concussion Recognition Tool (CRT6) and the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT6). These tools will equip healthcare professionals at motorsport events with the latest resources to identify and evaluate concussions, as well as determine the appropriate subsequent actions.
The NMAC is composed of some of the foremost medical and industry experts in the sport, including Dr Matthew Croxford, Dr Brent May, Dr Matthew Mac Partlin, Dr Jennifer Devine, Mr Greg Gibson, and Dr Karyn Lun, all dedicated to enhancing safety within the sport.
Motorsport Australia CEO Sunil Vohra highlighted that the updated guidelines were spearheaded by Dr Brent May, whose extensive background as Chief Medical Officer for Formula 1, Medical Advisor to Supercars, and FIA Doctor of the Year in 2016, as well as his expertise in anaesthesia and motorsport trauma, plays a crucial role in the advancement of safety protocols. This initiative is a testament to Motorsport Australia’s unwavering dedication to safety, risk management, and governance.
The Concussion Management Guidelines are set for publication in January 2025.
