Australian freestyle skier Laura Peel made a bold statement just a year before the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, securing two gold medals in remarkable fashion at a World Cup event over the weekend.
The seasoned Olympian clinched her first gold medal in Lac-Beauport, Canada, by executing a full-full-full—a dazzling manoeuvre that sees a skier perform three backflips combined with three 360-degree twists in a single jump—achieving a staggering score of 117.19 points.
Peel replicated this impressive feat to secure her second gold medal at the World Cup meet. Despite challenging blustery conditions affecting the precision of her jump, the 35-year-old still managed a remarkable score of 102.17 points.
After the second competition at the Canadian event, Peel shared the podium with fellow Aussie Airleigh Frigo, who, at just 25, earned her first World Cup medal, a bronze. Frigo executed a lay-full double backflip, which includes a straight backflip along with a backflip that incorporates a 360-degree twist, achieving 76.85 points.

After her impressive double gold performance, Peel expressed a sense of “relief.”
“Conditions have been varied, making it challenging to remain composed and trust myself while up there,” remarked Peel, who proudly served as Australia’s flag bearer at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
“I had a clearly defined plan right from the start and was determined not to deviate from it. I aimed to execute my jumps effectively in all sorts of conditions.”
“As we approach the [Milano-Cortina 2026] Games, I’m aware that the level of difficulty will increase, and I want to be prepared.”
Currently, Peel leads the World Cup standings with 210 points, eclipsing China’s Mengtao Xu (184 points) and American Karenna Elliott (160 points).
The athlete from Canberra is anticipated to compete in her fourth Olympic Games in Milano-Cortina 2026, taking place in the breathtaking Italian Alps next February.
