The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the venues for the opening ceremony and first game, as well as the third-place playoff and the final of the 2024 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN). This tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in August.
This marks the 8th edition of the biennial football competition organised by CAF, which showcases national teams comprising players active in their local leagues. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 2nd and conclude on August 30th.
The Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, will kick off the tournament with the opening match. The Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala, Uganda, will host the third-place playoff, while the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya, is set to be the venue for the final match on August 30th, 2025.
In a recent development, CAF has added Zanzibar to the list of host nations for the tournament. The New Amaan Stadium, which recently hosted the CAF Confederation Cup 2024/25 final between Tanzania’s Simba SC and Morocco’s RS Berkane in May, will hold the Group D matches.
“Moreover, Zanzibar has been designated as one of the Host Venues – highlighting CAF’s commitment to broadening the accessibility and inclusiveness of African football,” read a portion of CAF’s statement.

CAF has also outlined the group stage arrangements for the tournament: Group A includes Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia, based in Nairobi; Group B features Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic, located in Dar es Salaam; Group C consists of Uganda, Niger, Guinea, South Africa, and Algeria, with matches held in Kampala; while Group D includes Senegal, Congo, Sudan, and Nigeria, who will play in Zanzibar.
Kenya’s Harambee Stars are eager to make a statement in the tournament. In a recent interview, head coach Benni McCarthy expressed optimism about the team’s performance.
“I wanted to give the players some game time and integrate them into the squad. They were crucial to our plans, and I believe the boys heading into the CHAN have a clear understanding of the standards I expect from them.
“Their awareness of our potential style of play and the results we can achieve gives us something positive to look forward to as CHAN approaches. I’m excited and confident that we will have a thorough preparation period, ensuring our team is ready to put on a good show.
“Our primary aim is to bring pride to the country through more victories and to bring joy to our supporters.”
This edition will mark the first time the CHAN tournament is hosted by three different nations.
