Coach’s Insights on Newcastle Star and the Challenge Ahead
Robert Stanton had high hopes for Lachlan Bayliss when he first joined Newcastle Jets, and now the 22-year-old is making those hopes a reality.
Since his arrival at the start of the 2023-24 season on a scholarship from rivals Central Coast Mariners, Bayliss has blossomed in the Hunter region. Stanton believes the young star is on track for a call-up to the All Whites national team.
MATCH REPORT: Jets Soar to Historic Win with Star Signing
The New Zealand youth international, who represented his country at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, showcased his talents once again as the revitalised Jets secured a 3-1 victory against Brisbane Roar, marking their first three consecutive wins since 2018 and keeping their finals aspirations alive.
“Lachie was one of the first players I signed when I arrived here alongside Clayton Taylor. I had a good feeling he could excel in those attacking areas,” Stanton reflected after the match on Friday night.
“He started brightly but then suffered from OP (osteitis pubis) in his groin, which hindered his progress for a while. Clayton made strides, and we lost touch with Lachie during that period.”
“Upon his return, we supported him, and I recognised a different quality in him that allowed him to play deeper. I gave him a chance in that role, and it quickly paid off.”
“What you’re seeing now is the result of hard work that led to his inclusion in the Olympics. It’s an experience not many get to acquire, and he has really embraced that with all the effort he’s put in. He values every opportunity.”
“He plays with tremendous desire and hunger. The way he approaches matches is how he trains every day. I’m thrilled for him and how he’s being noticed as a quality player.”
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s eventually looked at for the senior national team in New Zealand in the near future.”

The Jets are experiencing an exciting phase, currently sitting ninth, yet just seven points shy of the top six after 20 rounds.
New recruit Kota Mizunuma, who scored his first A-Leagues goal against the struggling Roar, along with Lachie Rose, have played pivotal roles in Newcastle’s resurgence, but an unexpected positional shift has also been vital.
Following an injury to Aleksandar Susnjar just before their January 4 clash with Sydney FC, Stanton turned to captain Kosta Grozos. The 24-year-old, traditionally a midfielder, has risen to the challenge at centre-back.
Not only has he filled the gap, but he’s excelled, presenting a conundrum for Stanton.
‘THE CALIBRE IS SURPRISING’: Socceroo’s DMs Could Activate Fresh Wave of Talent
“In a few weeks, I will have to address this situation. The injury to Susnjar was an unexpected twist before the Sydney game,” he stated when questioned if Grozos would remain in defence.
“I made a quick adjustment without wanting to overhaul our system. I had faith that Kosta could contribute positively.”
“Two years ago, people may have thought it was a crazy idea, but it reflects his leadership. Empowering him as captain and allowing him to take on this responsibility, he recognised the challenge and embraced it, performing tremendously.”
“He may not fit the traditional image of a centre-back, but his vision, ball distribution, and passing range are impressive.”
“We’ll see how it unfolds. I still need to make a decision.”
‘We Are the Premier Team in New Zealand’
This assertion comes straight from Auckland FC head coach Steve Corica.
The Black Knights have laid claim to being “the top team in New Zealand” following a resounding derby victory over Wellington Phoenix.

In front of a record-breaking crowd at Go Media Stadium on Saturday, league leaders Auckland asserted their dominance with a resounding 6-1 victory against Wellington, completing a season sweep against the 2023-24 Semi-Finalists.
‘THAT’S QUITE AMUSING, ISN’T IT?’: Coaches Split Over Auckland Fans’ Cheeky Derby Tactics
Neyder Moreno’s hat-trick highlighted the overwhelming assault in Auckland, with the newcomers solidifying their position at the top of the table.
“That is truly special,” Corica expressed to the media.
“To win any match by such a margin fills me with pride for the players.”
“But to achieve that in a derby is exceptional. Especially after winning the first two derbies, this result convincingly demonstrates we are the best team in New Zealand.”
When asked if they had proven themselves as the best in the Isuzu UTE A-League, former Sydney FC manager Corica replied: “Not just yet. We have work to do on that front.”
“However, in New Zealand, winning all three matches against them gives our boys plenty to be proud of.”

‘That Doesn’t Reflect Our Team’
Mark Jackson’s expression spoke volumes after Central Coast Mariners faced a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday night.
The reigning champions, returning from their AFC Champions League Elite campaign in Japan, were completely overwhelmed by the Wanderers in Gosford.
Much-changed from their historic treble-winning season, Central Coast finds itself in 10th place, seven points adrift of the top six.

“We were aware of their capabilities, so it shouldn’t have taken us by surprise,” head coach Jackson commented regarding his team’s struggle against the Wanderers’ pressing strategy. “This was the third encounter this season – two league matches and one pre-season.”
“In both previous encounters, they outperformed us physically, smothering our game.”
“We prepared for this challenge and spoke openly about how we needed to respond because we know if we play to our strengths and win our battles, we can compete as we proved in their previous home match.”
“That wasn’t the case today.”
Jackson was also queried regarding Central Coast’s defensive layout, to which he replied: “People often discuss our use of a back three or four.”
“We adopt a 4-4-2 when out of possession and a 3-5-2 when in possession. This has been our approach from last season through to this one.”
“Whatever formations are noted on paper are merely perceptions. We’ve maintained our style of play and trust it, although we didn’t execute well today.”
“The primary issue was that we didn’t win the battles. That was key, as it swung the momentum in their favour leading to three goals.”
“We must take responsibility because that does not represent our team.”
Victory Coach’s Remark Following Melbourne Derby Stalemate
Melbourne Victory coach Arthur Diles directed criticism towards rivals Melbourne City after Saturday night’s exhilarating 2-2 derby draw at AAMI Park.
In a thrilling contest attended by a large derby crowd in Melbourne, Victory and City couldn’t secure a winner.

A vibrant sea of blue filled Victory’s home ground, and post-game, Diles ignited debate by highlighting the “one-sided” nature of the rivalry regarding fan support.
“Tonight, during our home game, it was clearly one-sided in terms of attendance. Conversely, the same rings true for their home games,” Diles conveyed to reporters.
“One team really contributes to filling the stands during this derby. Unfortunately, that’s the reality. I believe we need to see more support from the opposition to enhance the derby’s atmosphere.”
“However, kudos to our fans; be it home or away, they show remarkable support. That’s what defines this club.”
In contrast, City boss Aurelio Vidmar was visibly frustrated after conceding a penalty just before half-time.
With Victory leading 1-0, a VAR review led to a penalty award for a foul by German Ferreyra on Nikos Vergos, which Zinedine Machach converted to equalise before the two teams traded goals in the second half.
“It’s disappointing to concede a penalty right before half-time,” Vidmar expressed to reporters.
“I can’t comprehend how that was a penalty. It raises questions about the direction the game is heading.”
“If that’s considered a penalty, we are in trouble.”
‘Invaluable’ Recruit Helping Lead Glory’s Evolution
Perth Glory held Sydney FC to a goalless draw at HBF Park, where a recent January recruit garnered significant praise.
Glory keeper Oli Sail made a series of vital late saves to deny a persistent Sydney side, marking Perth’s first home draw of the season after one win and eight losses in 2024-24.

Another vital figure in the resurgent Glory is Tomislav Mrcela, recently signed for a second stint in Perth.
“When he first joined, we faced some tough results,” stated Glory coach David Zdrilic after his team held Sydney two points outside the top six.
“He experienced that challenging phase and has since been instrumental to our development.”
“Though he’s not the loudest on the pitch, his calming presence during crucial moments is evident – whether he’s addressing a team-mate or providing guidance.”
“That sort of leadership is invaluable. He’s been exceptional for us.”
John Aloisi’s Guidance for Golden Boot Contender and Socceroos Aspirant
Is Noah Botic poised for a call-up for the upcoming 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup qualifiers?
Based on his current form, the Western United striker’s name is in the mix for selection by the Subway Socceroos for the first time after scoring in Sunday’s 3-0 win over second-placed Adelaide United at Ironbark Fields.

The in-form forward increased his season tally to nine goals, drawing level with Joe Lolley from Sydney FC atop the Golden Boot standings.
“We’ve had ongoing discussions about him, and he’s committed to continuous improvement,” mentioned Western coach John Aloisi.
“He was particularly upset after our loss to Auckland and carried that emotion into this week. It shows determination when a striker is disappointed for not scoring.”
“I anticipated he would deliver something special today.”
BOTIC INTERVIEW: ‘Next Viduka’ Aspiring for Socceroos Dream Since Age 10, Ready to Prove Himself
When asked if Botic is on the verge of earning a Socceroos spot this upcoming FIFA window, Australian legend Aloisi had some encouraging advice.
“I’m not part of the coaching staff for the Socceroos, so I can’t speak on those selections, but regarding his performance, I would love for Noah to receive that call-up.”
“Should that not happen, it doesn’t detract from his future prospects with the Socceroos. He has vast potential ahead of him. Noah is by no means a completed product; he still has plenty to learn and improve.”
“Physically, he’s certainly progressing. Yet, I still think there’s more he can achieve. If he doesn’t get selected this time, there’s no need for him to be disheartened. He just needs to continue developing, and opportunities will arise accordingly.”
