The inaugural target for Western Australia’s prospective new NRL franchise has been revealed, with Payne Haas apparently at the forefront of the club’s ambitions.
Although official confirmation has not yet been given, the Perth-based team, expected to be named the Western Bears, could enter the league in 2027.
This timeline means that players entering the final year of their contracts next year will be open to offers starting from November 1.

On Nine’s 100% Footy, 9news and the Sydney Morning Herald’s Michael Chammas disclosed that the Broncos prop is set to attract interest from the new franchise.
“I spoke to people in Brisbane today; they are aware of this situation, have had internal discussions, and they plan to take action to ensure Payne Haas does not become a free agent by November 1,” he stated.
“There will be a phone call within the next week or two as they intend to meet with Payne Haas to extend his contract and potentially make him the highest-paid forward in NRL history.”
In early April, Broncos director Darren Lockyer refuted claims that the club would present a 10-year offer to the powerful forward.

Lockyer noted the “risk” involved, which contributed to their hesitation.
The establishment of a Western Australian team will create challenges for clubs seeking to retain players, as the new franchise is likely to have the capacity to offer lucrative deals.
Phil Gould acknowledged that a wage inflation could be imminent.
“Historically, whenever a new franchise is introduced into the league, we observe a boost in player salaries, early contract renewals to hold onto favoured players, anticipating that the new club will begin investing a year in advance,” he remarked.
“It is a nuanced scenario, but currently, there doesn’t seem to be any alarm bells ringing.”
