Valencia thwarted Villarreal’s bid for what would have been their third consecutive LaLiga victory—something they haven’t achieved in nearly a year—by grabbing a late equaliser, resulting in a 1-1 draw at the Estadi de la Ceramica.
Villarreal are still in the mix for a top-four finish, having won four of their last six matches leading into this game. They had a prime opportunity to reduce the gap to Athletic Club, currently occupying the last UEFA Champions League qualifying position, to just one point—though the Basque team still had a game to play on Sunday. Despite their strong form, Villarreal were clear favourites against 19th-placed Valencia, who arrived with three wins from their last four games but remained in the relegation zone.
The first significant chance of the match fell to Luis Rioja, whose long-range effort soared over the bar within the first five minutes. This set the tone for much of the opening half, as both teams struggled to find their shooting rhythm.
Diego Conde made a straightforward save, while Giorgi Mamardashvili was called into action twice. However, it was a moment of brilliance from Pape Gueye that broke the deadlock. Upon receiving the ball at the edge of the area, he unleashed a powerful shot into the far corner, leaving Mamardashvili helpless.
After the break, Villarreal sought a second goal to ensure a cushion. Early opportunities came the way of Alex Baena and Santi Comesana, but neither could test Mamardashvili adequately. Nicolas Pepe did manage to direct a low shot on target just before his substitution, but it was comfortably dealt with. Moments later, he thought he had scored, only for Tajan Buchanan to be flagged offside in the build-up.
With Valencia unable to exert sustained pressure on Villarreal, it seemed the home side was set to claim all three points. Yet, just after Pepelu had narrowly missed the target, Valencia struck a vital equaliser. Substitutes Rafa Mir and Umar Sadiq linked up, with Mir’s initial shot parried by Conde, allowing Sadiq to nod home the rebound.

This late goal ultimately defined the match, with both sides settling for a share of the points. Valencia, still searching for their first away victory in twelve attempts, move level on points with UD Las Palmas, just outside the relegation zone. Conversely, Villarreal will be frustrated by this draw and will need to regroup ahead of a crucial encounter against Rayo Vallecano next weekend as they chase European football.
