On Wednesday, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) announced its intention to proceed with a collaborative bid for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup, following a recent FIFA decision that enhances the prospects for the tournament to be held in the CONCACAF region.
In a succinct social media statement, the USSF confirmed its plans to “finalise the bid process to host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup“, working closely with the CONCACAF regional federation and its member nations.
“We are thrilled about the chance to host teams and fans, inspire future generations, and expand the game both regionally and globally,” remarked the US federation.
Originally, the United States and Mexico had aimed to co-host the 2027 Women’s World Cup but withdrew their bid last year shortly before the FIFA vote in Bangkok, deciding instead to focus on a successful bid for 2031.
The 2027 tournament was ultimately awarded to Brazil.
Earlier on Wednesday in Zurich, FIFA announced that the pool of eligible regions for hosting the 2031 tournament has been reduced to two: North America, Central America, and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) alongside Africa (CAF).
Nonetheless, the bid from the United States would face competition, as both South Africa and Morocco are also vying to host the 2031 event.
While FIFA has shown a keen interest in taking the Women’s World Cup to new regions, a North American bid presents a commercially viable option for FIFA, with high expectations for packed stadiums and record turnout.
North America has previously hosted the tournament three times, with the USA hosting in 1999 and 2003, and Canada in 2015.
A successful bid for 2031 would cap a busy period of significant sporting events in North America.
This year, FIFA is already conducting its inaugural Club World Cup in the region, with the United States, Canada, and Mexico set to host the men’s World Cup next year.
Additionally, Los Angeles is gearing up to host the 2028 Olympics.
FIFA has stated that the decision regarding the 2031 tournament will be made at the 76th FIFA Congress, which is scheduled to occur ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
