In a devastating turn of events, King Kirk, the leading contender for the Golden Slipper, tragically drowned in a training pool incident at Randwick on Tuesday.
Destined for greatness in the upcoming months, the Gai Waterhouse-Adrian Bott-trained colt was described by jockey Tim Clark as someone who “was ready to make a significant impact at the Magic Millions”, following his fourth-place finish in a time trial earlier that day.
“Regrettably, King Kirk has died this afternoon after an incident during his recovery,” a statement from his connections disclosed on Tuesday.
“King Kirk was performing a routine swim in the Randwick racecourse horse pool under the watchful eye of his regular handler when he became anxious and unintentionally ingested a large quantity of water.”
“Sadly, despite the prompt actions taken by his handlers, the Australian Turf Club staff, and veterinarians, we were unable to save him.”
The stable also issued a statement: “This is an exceptionally tough time for everyone involved as we come to terms with the loss of such an exceptionally gifted colt.”

“This is a heartbreaking loss not only for his ownership group but also for the entire Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott team. Our thoughts are with everyone who had the honour of working with and supporting King Kirk throughout his career. He will be sorely missed.”
The two-year-old was purchased for $300,000 at this year’s Magic Millions sales on the Gold Coast.
King Kirk secured victory in the $250,000 Group 3 Breeders Plate at Randwick on 5 October, which led bookmakers to favour him for the upcoming $5 million Golden Slipper in March.
“It’s incredibly distressing news, and I extend my sympathies to all the staff, connections, and everyone involved,” Clark commented.
“I had trialled him in the morning, and he felt exceptional; he was set to be a strong contender in the Magic Millions. This is truly shocking news, and my condolences go out to all those affected.”
