Andrew Johns has expressed worries regarding some of Penrith’s star players, particularly concerning their escalating “workload” as attention turns to their wellbeing.
The reigning champions suffered a surprise defeat against the Roosters on Friday night, compounded by an injury to Dylan Edwards that added insult to injury.
The fullback exited the match in the second half due to a groin issue, with the Panthers now awaiting the results of scans to determine the severity of the injury.
While there is hope that Edwards may avoid a significant stint on the sidelines, Johns is acutely aware of the challenges posed by a groin injury.

“I’ve dealt with troublesome groins in the past and some linger for 12 to 18 months, they just don’t heal properly,” he remarked on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
“The way he was limping is a worrying sign, and you could see him grabbing at the attachment when he walked off.”

Edwards has made a remarkable ascent over recent years, clinching four consecutive premierships with Penrith while also representing both NSW and Australia.
However, Johns warns that the ongoing demands on the club’s key players could pose a challenge for coach Ivan Cleary moving forward.

“It can be an overuse injury – and we know how fit Edwards is,” Johns noted.
“However, he, along with Isaah Yeo, Nathan Cleary, and Liam Martin have all played in Origin series, finals, and representative tours… they aren’t machines.”
“The intensity of the workload and the style of play is exceedingly demanding on them.”
Last season, Nathan Cleary managed to play just 13 games for the Panthers because of injuries, while Martin required off-season surgery and has dealt with various ailments.
Penrith will be aiming to bounce back in round three against the Melbourne Storm in a much-anticipated grand final rematch.
