The AFL has granted disgraced former North Melbourne player Tarryn Thomas the green light to return to football through the VFL.
On the brink of the 2024 season, the Kangaroos terminated the contract of the troubled player following an 18-match suspension imposed by the league due to allegations of inappropriate conduct towards women.
After a year away from the sport, the 24-year-old has now been given the chance to join a non-AFL-affiliated VFL club.
As reported by 9News Melbourne’s chief AFL reporter Tom Morris, potential destinations for the midfielder include Coburg, Frankston, Port Melbourne, Southport, Werribee, or Williamstown.
The possibility of his return relies on the interest and roster availability from these independent clubs in the VFL competition.

On Thursday, the AFL announced that Thomas has not been permitted to return to the top level of football in 2025.
“The AFL has been kept in the loop regarding Thomas’ progress, which includes his successful completion of a detailed education and behavioural change programme, along with a significant improvement in his conduct over time,” the statement clarified.
“To be clear, Thomas is not cleared to compete in the AFL in 2025 or for any club affiliated with the AFL in state league competitions; however, he is permitted to play in leagues below the AFL as part of his rehabilitation.”
“Thomas will also be ineligible for the mid-season draft for the 2025 AFL season.”
Nonetheless, Thomas can participate in the VFL, WAFL, or SANFL next season if independent clubs from Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia express interest.
The AFL also indicated that there is yet to be a decision regarding Thomas’ future in the sport beyond the upcoming season.
“No determination has been made concerning Thomas’ eligibility for the AFL in 2026 or later, and this issue is not currently under review,” the league’s announcement noted.
Throughout the 2023 season, Thomas was embroiled in multiple controversies, notably making headlines after a clandestine meeting with St Kilda.
At that time, the Saints acknowledged their desire to “explore the recruiting potential of the AFL’s most controversial player,” as reported by prominent AFL journalist Caroline Wilson.
Fans have also voiced their discontent regarding a potential return to the VFL.
“What a joke,” one user expressed on social media platform X.
“Absolute embarrassment,” remarked another.
Thomas played 69 matches for the Kangaroos after making his debut in 2019.
