While the foundation club has led numerous initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion within the Australian football scene, this marks the first occasion they have unveiled an official playing kit to honour the annual Pride Round.
Sydney FC’s men’s and women’s A-League teams will don the new “Unity Kit” proudly during the weekend of March 15-16, coinciding with the A-League’s third annual Pride Round celebration.
The men’s side will host Wellington Phoenix at Allianz Stadium on Sunday, March 16, a fixture that had to be rescheduled due to their double-legged AFC Champions League quarter-final clash against Jeonbuk Motors. Meanwhile, the women’s NPL team will face Wellington at Leichhardt Oval on March 15.
The matches were originally planned as a double-header at Allianz Stadium on the Saturday.
Commenting on the introduction of Sydney’s first-ever pride kit, CEO Mark Aubrey praised the club’s “dedication to uniting all of Sydney’s communities, including LGBTQI+ individuals, at our matches.“
“We believe wholeheartedly that football is for everyone, and that our games should serve as a welcoming environment where individuals from all backgrounds, faiths, and beliefs can feel at home.
“Our Unity Kit signifies the beginning of a long-term commitment to inclusivity.
“In the coming years, we aspire to broaden this initiative, incorporating additional elements that acknowledge and celebrate the rich diversity of our multicultural city.”
In a statement lauding the launch of the A-Leagues’ third Pride Round, Executive Chair Stephen Conroy remarked:
“We embarked on this journey alongside Pride Cup and the PFA in 2021, as part of our enduring commitment to making football accessible and inclusive for all.
“We take pride in hosting our third league-wide Pride Celebration, anchored in player education and driven by the goal to create a lasting impact. We have made significant progress in Australia and New Zealand to enhance inclusivity in football for both fans and players, and we are eager to continue our contributions into 2025.”
