For two decades, Paul Gallen has been a key figure at the Sharks, but that didn’t prevent him from sharing a “special” occasion with their fierce rivals, the Dragons.
The premiership-winning captain of Cronulla is regarded as one of the club’s most cherished icons, having played over 300 matches in the distinctive black, white, and blue colours.
In a delightful surprise ahead of Kyle Flanagan’s 100th first-grade game this weekend, Gallen appeared at St George Illawarra’s pre-match gathering.
Seven years prior, Gallen served as captain when Flanagan made his NRL debut and was invited by former Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan to partake in the Thursday celebration.

“I’ve seen him progress through the ranks and the junior system,” Gallen remarked.
“Congratulations, mate. I wish you the very best for tomorrow—I hope all of the boys perform well for you.”
“Every NRL game is a tough battle these days…so give it your all.”

Flanagan’s journey in the top tier has been a rollercoaster, having been released by both the Roosters and Bulldogs after beginning his career with the Sharks, but he has now regained his footing in Wollongong under his father’s guidance.
“In his first-grade debut, Gal was the captain, and Val was also in the team— they played against Newcastle at Shark Park and secured a win,” Flanagan, who shares a close bond with Gallen from their 2016 premiership win, stated.
“Gal presented Kyle with his initial jumper… so it felt appropriate for him to present the jumper for his 100th game.”
“He wrote on the back of his door when he was younger, not quite remembering his age, that his goal was to play 100 NRL games… and he’s achieved it, so well done to him.”

At 26 years old, Flanagan embraced the heartfelt moment, surrounded by friends and family.
“It’s truly special to receive my 100-game jersey from someone I’ve admired,” Flanagan expressed to his Dragons teammates.
“I aim to repay that faith, and I can’t wait for Saturday night.”
Flanagan will join forces with Lachlan Ilias as the Red V face off against their historical rivals, Canterbury, on Saturday.
