Paris St Germain’s manager, Luis Enrique (54), expressed his discontent with the final moments of their exhilarating victory against Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday, as his team conceded a last-minute goal that intensified the drama.
With their 3-2 win, PSG boosted their winning streak to eight matches across all competitions and amassed 59 points in Ligue 1, extending their lead to a staggering 13 points ahead of second-placed Olympique de Marseille.
While the Spanish coach commended his players for another commanding display, he admitted that they lost control of the match against the sixth-placed Lyon despite having twice established a two-goal cushion, which forced them to fend off pressure right until the final whistle.
“The second half started with great intensity, and we scored two goals, but there were two crucial moments where we kept pushing for more goals,” Enrique remarked during a press conference.
“When you play too impulsively, you can lose your composure, and with a two-goal lead, it’s important to manage the game effectively. When your opponent is already on the back foot, there’s a greater chance of risk.”
“The match became complicated towards the end, and in those final moments, we felt like we were excessively defending, which, in my view, isn’t the most effective way to defend.”
Following an impressive 10-0 aggregate victory over Brest in the Champions League playoffs earlier in the week, Enrique again praised his squad’s mentality, noting that they’ve remained unbeaten since November.
“Our focus has always been on playing attacking football from the outset. We aim to provide our supporters with not just wins and titles, but also an enjoyable style of play,” he stated.
“Today, the team showed continued improvement. In terms of character, we handled a match that became quite tense; the second half displayed wonderful emotional and physical control.”
“When a match gets chaotic, it’s crucial not to lose your composure when you’re ahead, but I believe the team exhibited further growth in personality and resilience today.”
PSG’s next challenge is a trip to face fourth-tier Stade Briochin in the quarter-finals of the French Cup on Wednesday.
