Collingwood’s first-round wake-up call appeared to be just the impetus Port Adelaide required, leading to a commanding 72-point victory over Richmond on Saturday.
Nearly from the outset of the match, the Tigers found themselves in search of solutions, as Port seized control of the game, energising the enthusiastic crowd.
However, the triumph was marred by an immediate injury setback, with young forward Jack Lukosius forced to leave the field with a suspected knee injury.
The 24-year-old managed just four minutes on the pitch before colliding with Richmond’s Jayden Short and limping off to the sidelines.
Lukosius received prompt medical attention on his leg from the club’s trainers before being taken to the Port locker rooms.
In a positive development, he was able to return to the field briefly before coach Ken Hinkley decided to substitute him out of the game.

His departure paved the way for Christian Moraes to step onto the field for his debut, while the star forward watched from the sidelines with ice applied to his knee.
Lukosius’ injury adds another point of concern for the Port Adelaide coach, especially as the team is already absent talented forward Todd Marshall for an extended period.
Moreover, Port’s injury list includes Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, who is set to miss at least two more months due to a back injury, while Zak Butters is not expected to return for at least another month.

The Power concluded the match with an impressive total of 477 disposals, marking a sensational day for Travis Boak, who became the new club games record holder.
“It’s important to celebrate your champions forever,” remarked Jack Riewoldt on Fox Footy.
Boak played in his 393rd match for Port Adelaide on Saturday, with 373 of those recognised as official AFL games.
The previous record was held by Russell Ebert, who played 392 times for the club.
