Joseph Tapine, the captain of the Raiders, has candidly shared that he “became hooked on pokies” during the early stages of his NRL career, describing it as the “toughest lesson” he has faced.
At 30 years of age, Tapine has garnered immense respect in the rugby league arena, showcasing his talents for Canberra at the club level and representing the Kiwis on the international stage.
He made his debut over a decade ago with the Knights before relocating to the capital, where he has firmly established himself as an elite front-rower.

Nevertheless, Tapine’s rise wasn’t without challenges during his early years.
In a sincere interview on the latest episode of Nine’s Marlee and Me, he discussed the gambling and alcohol culture prevalent in rugby league back when he was starting out.
“The hardest lesson for me was definitely becoming addicted to pokies,” Tapine admitted.
“I was living in a shared house when a mate suggested we grab dinner. We ended up in a pokie room, and like many people’s first experience, I got lucky — I put in $20 and hit the jackpot.”

“Fast forward three years, and I was struggling to shake off that addiction. Pokies and drinking were big in the culture, making it difficult for me to move past it.”
“These things can really grab hold of you. As athletes, we crave that adrenaline, and it fulfills that desire. It took quite some time for me to end that cycle.”

“I wasn’t educated about finances growing up. I had to pick it up as I went along, and Kirsten [his wife] played a significant role in teaching me those lessons. Once we got together, she presented me with an ultimatum.”
“I believe relocating here was pivotal, especially around the time I faced that challenge in Newcastle. The shift in environment was incredibly beneficial for me.”
Tapine’s remarks come as the sport continues to address these pressing issues, especially with players as young as 17 now entering the full-time NRL system.
The hard-hitting enforcer excelled for Canberra in their round one victory in Las Vegas but faced a two-game suspension due to a shoulder charge.
He is set to make his return for the Raiders in round four against the struggling Cowboys.
