Phil Gould has long believed that Cameron Ciraldo possesses the qualities of an exceptional NRL coach, and now he’s keen to see him at the helm of the Bulldogs for many years ahead.
Following his apprenticeship at Penrith, where he earned commendations for mastering the club’s defensive strategies, Ciraldo made the switch to Canterbury with a five-year contract.
His initial season was far from smooth, with the Bulldogs finishing in 15th place on the ladder during his debut campaign.

While the on-field results were scarce during the 2023 season, Ciraldo quietly laid the groundwork for a potent team.
Last season marked a significant milestone as the Bulldogs reached the finals for the first time in eight years.
As of 2025, the team has catapulted to the top of the ladder, now firmly positioned as a legitimate premiership contender alongside the Melbourne Storm.
In an interview with Danny Weidler from 9News Sydney, Gould reflected on Ciraldo’s ascent at Belmore over the past two years, expressing his unwavering confidence in him.
“In my mind, it was never a gamble,” stated the Bulldogs general manager.
“When people referred to Cameron as a rookie coach, I didn’t see him that way at all.

“He’s destined to be a long-term coach; a career coach. I genuinely hope he’s here for the next 30 years. When he first joined us, I stated that the Bulldogs needed a coach for the next two decades, and I truly believe he’s the one who can deliver that.
“His start was undeniably challenging and came earlier than what I had anticipated.
“However, he has demonstrated his value thus far, and the best is yet to come.”

It’s an impressive endorsement from Gould, who just marked 50 years in the game and is celebrated as one of the sport’s legendary coaches.
Ciraldo’s ongoing progress—paired with an ever-evolving squad at the Bulldogs—provides Gould with assurance that a solid foundation is being laid for the future, despite the potential challenges posed by new teams emerging in Perth and Papua New Guinea.
“I’m not concerned about losing players,” he expressed.
“We won’t lose anyone who we wish to retain. None of our players have expressed a desire to leave.
“That’s a testament to the culture nurtured by the coaches and built among the players themselves.
“There isn’t a single player here who wants to play for another club.”
Canterbury will aim to extend their lead at the top of the NRL ladder when they face the Roosters on Friday night at Accor Stadium.
