Nuno Espirito Santo (51) is confident that a solid FA Cup campaign could enhance Nottingham Forest’s chances of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League, especially after they progressed to the fifth round via penalties.
Following a thrilling 2-2 draw away to Exeter, the team triumphed in the penalty shootout on Tuesday.
This result positions Nuno’s squad, currently third in the Premier League, as the highest-ranked team still in the FA Cup, with both Arsenal and Liverpool having been eliminated.
Forest is set for a hectic schedule against Fulham, Newcastle, and Arsenal prior to their next FA Cup clash with Ipswich at the City Ground in early March.
Despite the busy calendar, Nuno expressed that this could work to their advantage, citing the squad’s depth as key to competing on multiple fronts.
“If everyone has minutes under their belt, it could certainly ease our situation in the Premier League, I believe,” said the Portuguese manager.
“As long as we maintain our health and have sufficient numbers, I’m optimistic we can perform well in both tournaments.”
Nuno made 10 alterations to the lineup that had overwhelmed Brighton 7-0 in their last league outing, setting the stage for a fifth-round clash against fellow Premier League side Ipswich.
The former Wolves and Tottenham manager commented: “Unfortunately, we can’t give playing time to every player, so this selection (for Cup matches) is a recognition for those who have been putting in the hard work, including the younger lads.
“It’s beneficial for us; it’s not merely resting players, but ensuring we manage everyone in the squad.”
Nottingham Forest last claimed the FA Cup in 1959, having not won it even during their illustrious years under Brian Clough, who secured numerous trophies while at the helm from 1975 to 1993.
