The Newcastle Jets secured their second consecutive victory, triumphing 1-0 over reigning champions Sydney FC in the Ninja A-League on Saturday.
A critical strike from Sheridan Gallagher in the 42nd minute proved to be the decisive moment, marking the Jets’ first home victory against the Sky Blues since 2017. Earlier this season, they had also managed to defeat Sydney on their turf.
With two wins in a row, the Jets, who were semi-finalists last season, currently sit in 10th place, seven points adrift of the top six. In contrast, Sydney remains firmly at the bottom of the table.
Before kick-off, players observed a guard of honour in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The Jets took to the field eager to follow up their recent victory, which ended a string of 10 matches without a win, while aiming for their first home success over Sydney since 2017.
On the other hand, Sydney FC was determined to snap a seven-game winless run away from home, a drought that had persisted since May of the previous year.
The first half was closely fought, with the Jets slightly edging proceedings, a fact that was reflected on the scoreboard.
After Tash Prior had a goal disallowed for offside in the 24th minute, Gallagher stepped up to open the scoring just before half-time.
Gallagher found herself at the right place to tap the ball into the net from close range, marking her fifth goal of the campaign.
The second half continued in a similar vein, featuring an A-League debut for 18-year-old Jasmine Black, who replaced the injured Bethany Mason-Jones.
Black made a significant impact, notably producing a fine save to deny the Jets a second goal with just 12 minutes remaining.
