New Orleans Pelicans to Lead NBA Showdown in Melbourne: The Excitement Cannot Be Denied!

In October, the NBA will see the New Orleans Pelicans travel to Melbourne for a couple of pre-season clashes.

This morning, a joint announcement was made by the NBA, NBL, and the Victorian government, confirming the Pelicans as the team making the journey ahead of the 2025/2026 season.

The Pelicans are set to take on NBL rivals Melbourne United on October 3 and South East Melbourne Phoenix on October 5, both matches will be held at Melbourne Park.

This marks the first time an NBA team will compete in Australia, with all involved parties participating in promotional events in the lead-up to the games.

The Pelicans have faced a challenging season marred by injuries, meaning they could field a substantially different lineup than the one currently active in the NBA, as roster changes and player rest likely factor in.

“This announcement is of great significance for basketball in Australia and the NBL,” stated NBL Executive Director Larry Kestelman.

“Bringing an NBA team to Australia has been a long-held ambition for everyone involved with the NBL, and seeing this initiative come to life after a 15-year journey is a testament to what can be achieved when you ‘Dream Big’.
