Alex de Minaur has been eliminated from the Indian Wells tournament after a straight-sets defeat.
The ninth-seeded Australian entered his round of 16 clash against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in fine form, having recently secured a commanding 6-4, 6-0 win over Hubert Hurkacz.
However, Cerundolo, who previously triumphed over Botic van de Zandschulp—the player who knocked out Novak Djokovic—caught de Minaur by surprise, winning 7-5, 6-3. This result served as revenge for Cerundolo after de Minaur had earlier bested him in the third round of the Australian Open this year.
It was a challenging match for de Minaur, who struggled with missed chances, converting just 3 out of 14 break point opportunities, while the Argentine impressively managed to convert 6 of his 7 chances.
Before this match, de Minaur held a strong 15-4 record in 2025, which included a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open and a runner-up finish in Rotterdam.
The 10th-ranked Aussie showcased his dominance in previous rounds at Indian Wells, easily overcoming both David Goffin and Hurkacz.
