Michael Hooper has indicated that it is unlikely he will join Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies squad for the upcoming Lions series; however, he hasn’t entirely dismissed the prospect of a return to international rugby.
The esteemed flanker announced his retirement from international rugby in June 2024 but has since made a comeback to club rugby with Japanese League One team Toyota Verblitz.
At 33 years of age, Hooper has played two matches for Toyota this season—one for their second team and another in the premier league.

During an appearance on Stan Sport’s Inside Line podcast, Hooper stated that a return would necessitate “some really extraordinary circumstances.”
“For me to be considered again, I would need to play some outstanding rugby. Plus, I’ve already retired from international rugby. While I’ve seen others shift their plans, there would need to be significant reasons for me to reconsider,” he explained.
“The commitment level to play at Test level is incredibly high, and I’m not sure I possess the necessary determination to put my body on the line and display the intent required to be part of that series.
“… competing in 15s is fantastic; I had my struggles in sevens on various levels—it’s an incredibly tough game. I felt a bit rusty returning to 15s, but it felt like home being back on the field.
“My aim isn’t to revive my career, so I’m taking things one week at a time, which is essential at the team level … I’m definitely keeping my options open, but I haven’t come here with a fixed agenda.”
Hooper mentioned that his communication with Schmidt has been limited to a “brief text” when he signed with Verblitz.
