Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd has raised concerns about the Bombers’ decision to advance contract discussions with coach Brad Scott.
On Monday night, Tom Morris from Nine reported on Footy Classified that Scott, under contract with Essendon until the end of 2026, is poised to extend his agreement with the club through to the end of the 2027 season.
“I wouldn’t have pushed for an extension at this point. What’s the rush? Why?” Lloyd expressed on Footy Classified.
“He has the entire year ahead, and a decision could easily be made at season’s end.”
“I would prefer to assess Brad’s performance and the team’s form over the next 22 weeks, especially since he’s already secured for the upcoming season.”

“Unless they anticipate a disappointing season ahead and expect that Brad will face significant scrutiny, it’s difficult to see why this decision was made now,” he added.
Morris noted that Essendon had “handed Scott the reins” and had allegedly communicated to him: “You can shape this team however you wish.”
He also highlighted that Scott, who previously coached North Melbourne for many years, has brought along a significant number of former Kangaroos staff to the Bombers.

Scott was appointed as the coach of Essendon in September 2022 after the club parted ways with Ben Rutten.
The Bombers have not reached the finals since 2021 and have not secured a win in the finals for over 20 years.
Their 2025 premiership campaign is set to kick off with a match against Hawthorn at the MCG this coming Friday night.
