Rumours surrounding Nathan Cleary’s potential switch to rugby are gathering momentum, as suggested by well-informed commentator Morgan Turinui.
The chatter reignited on Thursday when rugby legend Tim Horan shared on Stan Sport’s Rugby Heaven programme that NRL sensation Cleary is “quite keen” on contemplating a move to rugby.
However, with Cleary’s partner, Mary Fowler, playing for Manchester City, it’s likely his future would be tied to Europe rather than Australia.

The Penrith Panthers star could potentially don the Wallabies jersey as a ‘Giteau Law’ player, providing Rugby Australia doesn’t need to splurge excessively for his services.
“There is interest, I’ve heard, from both sides,” Turinui remarked on Nine’s Wide World of Sports this past Sunday.
“He’s already achieved so much in rugby league; what’s his next challenge? How will this impact his personal life?”

“I’d not be shocked if he goes over to Europe, earns a couple of million euros, and remains available for the Wallabies,” Turinui added.
“That might suggest we won’t see him in Super Rugby, but there’s certainly interest in him taking on international rugby.”
With Australia set to host the Rugby World Cup in 2027, Cleary will need to move quickly if he wants to make it onto the international stage.
What are the possibilities for the Lions series? Could a World Club Cup materialise? And is there a case for forming a SANZAA team?
At present, the Wallabies lack a standout No.10, as incumbent Noah Lolesio is set to move to Japan next year.
Cleary’s solid fundamentals and sharp intellect make him a strong candidate for a swift transition.
“I reckon there’s definitely a place for him in the squad,” Turinui suggested jokingly.
“He played rugby as a child, has spent considerable time in New Zealand, and he’s a natural player. His kicking skills would translate very well to rugby.”
Turinui also playfully criticized his Stan Sport colleague for being too eager with the Cleary news.
“Tim Horan can’t keep a secret,” he quipped.

“If you’re looking to secure Nathan Cleary for rugby, you do it discreetly, under the cover of darkness, get the signature, and then make it public.”
“It’s an intriguing question — what more does he want to achieve in rugby league? Is it only about becoming an Immortal now?”
Rugby league great Andrew Johns dismissed the speculation on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, asserting, “What’s today, June 1 — it’s not April Fool’s Day. I’m giving a definite no to that.”
Queensland coach Billy Slater also expressed doubt, stating, “It would be quite a coup for the Wallabies if they managed to sign Nathan Cleary, but I can’t see that happening.”

Cameron Smith also expressed disbelief, stating, “No chance,” while Brad Fittler – whose son Zach is signed with the NSW Waratahs – also voiced his thoughts.
“Consider what they’ve invested in Joseph Suaalii and how much he costs — Cleary will undeniably command an even higher fee,” Fittler remarked.
