Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim (40) is concerned that Lisandro Martinez’s (27) season could be over after the Argentine defender was taken off on a stretcher during a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at home on Sunday.
The Red Devils suffered their fifth loss in six Premier League matches at Old Trafford, with Jean Philippe-Mateta scoring twice for the Eagles in the second half, interrupted by an extended stoppage for Martinez to receive medical attention.
“Licha is incredibly important to us, not only for his skills on the pitch but also for the leadership he provides, particularly during such challenging times,” Amorim stated. “Now we need to rally around Licha.”
“I believe it’s a serious issue. We’ll need to wait for the medical staff’s assessment, but it doesn’t sound good.”
United have only one day remaining to acquire a replacement for Martinez in the transfer market before the window shuts on Monday.
Before the match against Palace, Patrick Dorgu was introduced as the first major signing of the Amorim era following a £25 million transfer from Lecce.
However, the Portuguese coach emphasised the need for United to learn from past errors in the transfer market and to avoid hasty decisions that could lead to expensive mistakes.
“We are doing everything possible to enhance the team while steering clear of previous missteps, all while managing the urgency of the current situation,” Amorim added.
“We are fully aware of our club’s circumstances at this moment, and we’re committed to doing our best.”
United’s loss marked their seventh defeat in 13 home league games, leaving them in 13th position in the table, just behind Palace.
Amorim has previously labelled his team as the “worst in United’s history” but aimed to project a more optimistic outlook despite another disappointing showing.
“It was a tough day for both the team and the supporters,” he remarked. “We have lost again and conceded two avoidable goals.”
“It’s understandable for fans to feel discouraged; this season has been a challenge for them. However, football can change in an instant. I will prepare for the next match and remain focused on moving forward. Better days are ahead.”
