Luka Modric, the Croatian midfielder for Real Madrid, announced on Thursday that he will be departing from the esteemed club following this summer’s Club World Cup.
“Everything has a beginning and an end… on Saturday, I’ll take to the pitch for my final match at the Santiago Bernabeu,” the 39-year-old stated in an Instagram post, as he approaches the end of his contract with Los Blancos.
“I leave with a full heart, brimming with pride, gratitude, and countless unforgettable memories.
“While I won’t be donning this shirt on the pitch after the Club World Cup, I will forever be a fan of Madrid.”
Since joining from Tottenham in 2012, Modric has made nearly 600 appearances for Real Madrid, securing six Champions League trophies and four La Liga titles, among other accolades.
The Croatian faced initial challenges at the beginning of his Madrid career following a transfer valued at around 35 million euros ($40 million), but he soon established himself as one of the top midfielders in the world.
Modric clinched the Ballon d’Or in 2018, recognising his impressive performances both for Madrid and the Croatian national team, who finished as runners-up at the World Cup in Russia.
“Over the years, I’ve witnessed extraordinary moments, comebacks that seemed impossible, finals, celebrations, and unforgettable nights at the Bernabeu,” Modric reflected.
“We accomplished everything, and I was incredibly happy. Truly, very happy.”
