Luka Modric, the Croatian midfielder for Real Madrid, announced on Thursday that he will be departing from the Spanish club following the upcoming Club World Cup this summer.
“Every journey comes to an end… on Saturday, I will play my final match at the Santiago Bernabeu,” Modric, 39, shared in an Instagram post, signalling the conclusion of his contract with Los Blancos.
“I’m leaving with a heart full of pride, gratitude, and countless unforgettable memories.
“Though I won’t be donning this jersey on the pitch after the Club World Cup, I will always remain a supporter of Madrid.”
Since joining the club from Tottenham in 2012, Modric has made nearly 600 appearances for Real Madrid, securing an impressive six Champions League titles and four La Liga championships, among other accolades.
His journey at Madrid began with challenges after a transfer valued at around €35 million (approximately $40 million), but he quickly found his rhythm, evolving into one of the foremost midfielders globally.
In 2018, Modric was awarded the Ballon d’Or in recognition of his outstanding performances with both Real Madrid and the Croatian national team, highlighted by Croatia’s runner-up finish at the World Cup in Russia.
“Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to experience remarkable moments, comebacks that seemed beyond reach, finals, celebrations, and enchanting nights at the Bernabeu,” Modric reflected.
“We achieved everything possible and I was incredibly happy. Truly, very happy.”
