Paris St Germain manager Luis Enrique praised his side’s remarkable display as they overwhelmed Ligue 1 rivals Brest with a 7-0 victory on Wednesday, securing their spot in the Champions League last 16.
PSG made the task easy against Champions League debutants Brest, triumphing 10-0 on aggregate in what marked their most commanding win on the European stage.
The French champions etched their name in history as the first team to feature seven different goalscorers in a single match in the continent’s premier club competition.
“The fact that we had seven different players finding the net is a testament to our squad and the mentality of the individuals,” Luis Enrique expressed to the media.
“Today, almost everyone found the scoresheet because when we got into the final third, they chose to pass to a better positioned teammate,” he continued.
“If they had been greedy, we wouldn’t have scored as many goals. I absolutely love it; this is the ideal way to head into the next round. I commend all my players for their mindset.”
Enrique also acknowledged Brest, recognising them as one of the top teams in France, while emphasising PSG’s focus, stating they refused to become complacent despite holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg.
“Playing against them has always been challenging. They had an impressive Champions League run,” he remarked.
“We started strongly, and matches that seem easy can often become tricky. We stayed focused and respected one of the best teams in France throughout.”
Looking ahead, PSG faces a tougher test in the next round against either Liverpool or Barcelona.
Enrique is confident his team is ready for any challenge after not securing automatic qualification for the last 16.
“This situation was unjust for us. We should have secured a top position,” the Spaniard stated. “We have taken the more difficult route, which has made us stronger and better prepared for what lies ahead.
“I don’t think there are any opponents tougher than those we’ve already played.”
