Australian swimmer Lani Pallister triumphed in the 800m freestyle final at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Budapest, marking Australia’s inaugural gold medal at this year’s event.
From the outset, Pallister maintained her lead, finishing with a remarkable time of 8:01.95, which also set new Championship, National, and Oceania records.
This victory followed her decision to withdraw from the 100m heats earlier that day, enabling her to concentrate on the 800m race. Just a day prior, she had secured a silver medal in both the 400m freestyle and the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Pallister previously claimed the 800m freestyle title in 2022, making her only the second woman ever to defend this title successfully.
She is the goddaughter of swimming legend Dawn Fraser, who unfortunately sustained significant injuries from a fall earlier this week but is on the path to recovery.
“Hearing about her fall has been incredibly distressing and frightening, considering the bond we share,” she expressed in a statement on Tuesday.
“Janelle and I wish to convey our sincere and heartfelt concern regarding Dawn’s recent incident that necessitated her hospitalisation. Dawn is not only an extraordinary athlete and an icon; she holds an incredibly special place in our lives, and her health is always at the forefront of our thoughts.

“We are pleased to hear that she is recovering well and is receiving the care she requires from her family and hospital staff.”
In addition, Australia’s Alexandria Perkins secured bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly final, breaking the long-standing Oceania and Australian record previously held by Marieke Guehrer since 2009.
These performances have propelled Australia to fourth place on the medal table at the World Short Course Championships in Budapest.
