Bayern Munich’s 1-1 stalemate with Union Berlin featured two contrasting narratives, as Bundesliga manager Vincent Kompany noted on Saturday, acknowledging his team’s display in a match largely dominated by Bayern at the Alte Försterei stadium.
Leroy Sané’s goal in the 75th minute was equalised by Benedict Hollerbach, in a clash where Bayern commanded possession but were consistently stifled by the hosts’ solid defensive setup.
“For us, it was a match of two narratives; there was our performance and then the end result. Naturally, when we fail to secure three points, it’s disappointing. It’s as straightforward as that,” Kompany expressed to the media.
“However, I’ve been around long enough to recognise that this was not a poor performance away from home. We managed to neutralise threats for a significant portion of the match… Ultimately, credit goes to the opposition for their tenacity.”
“Often, when a team fails to score, it’s not solely about strikers missing chances. The rival defenders and goalkeeper often play their parts well. And they certainly did that today.”
Bayern had a total of 14 corners during the encounter but struggled to take full advantage, with many of their attempts falling short, failing to clear the first defender.
“We’ve had great success from corners this season, having scored plenty of goals from them,” Kompany added.
“In moments where the corners lacked their usual effectiveness, or the final pass wasn’t right, we still managed to pose a threat towards the end.
“We remained in a position to claim victory. Even when things aren’t perfect, you can still manage to win 1-0, but that wasn’t our reality today.”
Bayern, currently sitting atop the Bundesliga with 62 points from 26 fixtures, will next welcome St Pauli on March 29.
