Kevin De Bruyne expressed his pride in his role in establishing Manchester City as the preeminent force in English football over the last ten years, following his final home appearance at the Etihad on Tuesday.
The Belgian midfielder received tributes both prior to and following a 3-1 victory against Bournemouth, as City edged closer to securing qualification for next season’s Champions League.
Throughout his illustrious tenure, De Bruyne has claimed six Premier League titles, five League Cups, two FA Cups, and the 2023 Champions League.
With 108 goals and 177 assists across more than 400 matches, he has firmly etched his name among the all-time greats of the Premier League.
“It’s been an incredible journey, an absolute joy,” De Bruyne shared with Sky Sports.
“I aim to bring joy to the fans, play attacking football, and showcase my creativity on the pitch — that’s just who I am, and I want to enjoy myself. I believe we’ve had a lot of fun over these ten years.”
“There are wins and losses along the way. It has been rewarding to work hard and build something for this club that has greatly improved from where it started. I’m immensely proud.”
However, De Bruyne’s farewell at the Etihad didn’t conclude with a goal; rather, he squandered a golden opportunity.
After receiving a pass from Omar Marmoush, the 33-year-old struck the crossbar with the goal at his mercy, admitting he had “no excuses” for the misstep, despite a slight bobble.
“It’s dreadful. There are no excuses!” he conceded. “My son is definitely going to give me a hard time about that one.”
