Parramatta coach Jason Ryles has come to the defence of Dylan Brown, who is set to join Newcastle, after the star playmaker was met with boos from Eels supporters prior to Sunday’s game.
Brown received a frosty response at CommBank Stadium following the announcement earlier in the week of his move to the Knights at the end of the season, with a reported 10-year deal worth up to $14 million.
There were audible boos as the Parramatta line-up for the clash against the Wests Tigers was revealed and the Kiwi international’s image appeared on the big screen.
When asked about the unfavourable reaction following the Eels’ 32-6 defeat, Ryles remarked, “Was there? I couldn’t hear it up there; it’s quite soundproof.”
“What do I think of that? That’s just part of footy. It’s emotional fans being passionate, and that might be how they feel, but it doesn’t change our opinion of him.”

The Tigers’ halves, Jarome Luai and Lachlan Galvin, put on a stellar performance as Benji Marshall’s side secured their first win of the season.
In contrast, Brown and his halves partner, train-and-trialist Ronald Volkman, found it challenging to make an impact.
Nevertheless, Ryles refrained from criticising his star five-eighth, stating, “He was steady. He’s shown improvement from last week. We’re still working through various aspects with Dylan and his game.”
“There are many dynamics at play, and he needs support from those around him to really excel … He probably has elements of his game he’s eager to enhance, but there are numerous factors needing attention before we can properly assess his performance.”

The Eels’ defeat by 32-6 against the Tigers came after a staggering 56-18 loss to the Storm in round one, adding to the challenges of Ryles’ first season as an NRL head coach.
“I’m incredibly disappointed,” he said regarding the loss to the Tigers.
“While it might not appear that way, there are many positive indicators regarding individual performances.
“We’re working on certain aspects of our game, but we’re experiencing lapses in concentration and still need substantial improvement in our defence on the edges … My immediate feelings are of profound disappointment.”
