Former Wallabies skipper Will Skelton has thrown his full support behind Ronan O’Gara as a potential replacement for Joe Schmidt as Australia’s head coach.
O’Gara, recognised as one of Ireland’s finest fly-halves and ranking as the sixth highest points scorer in Test rugby history, has successfully transitioned into coaching following his illustrious playing career.
At 47, O’Gara has held assistant coaching roles at Racing 92 and the Crusaders, before stepping up to lead Skelton’s La Rochelle.

Having achieved two European championships with the French side, O’Gara has made it clear he is keen on taking up the Wallabies position.
“I believe he’d excel in that role. He’s an exceptional coach, and his experience in the Top 14 is impressive,” Skelton shared on the Kick Offs and Kick Ons podcast.
“He’s coaching at a high level with a top European club, facing premier teams. The way he prepares for matches is akin to Joe’s, especially regarding the nuances and building rapport with the squad.”

“He’s meticulous in his approach and pushes us to perform at our best, even if that means putting me under pressure during meetings, regardless of my on-field involvement,” Skelton remarked.
“Bringing that expertise to a Wallabies squad loaded with talent – like Bobby Valetini, Taniela Tupou, and Noah Lolesio – he would be invaluable in those critical situations, guiding Noah and the other playmakers like Ben Donaldson.”
Skelton also confirmed his readiness to play for the Wallabies against the British and Irish Lions this year.

“It’s challenging because every player wants to represent the Wallabies. I find myself in a unique position where I’m eligible while also juggling club commitments; this competition is relentless,” Skelton said.
“I look forward to hearing from Joe any time soon to see if I’m still on his radar.”
In other news, NSW Waratahs coach Dan McKellar expressed that he did not anticipate being offered the Wallabies role.

McKellar noted his surprise at hearing comments from Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss regarding the role, stating, “I can’t say I’ve been approached about it.”
Kiss had mentioned he spoke with Rugby Australia about the position, indicating that it was no different from other Super Rugby coaches’ discussions.
“That’s news to me, to be honest,” McKellar remarked.

“I haven’t chatted with Kissy for a few months, but honestly, I’m focused on my role at the Waratahs. I’m not banking on being considered for the Wallabies position,” McKellar added.
He also downplayed any injury concerns surrounding Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, who did not partake in Thursday’s training session.
“Joe’s all good. Occasionally, even Ferraris need to be kept in the garage for a bit,” he quipped.
