Inter Milan’s head coach, Simone Inzaghi, emphasised the importance of strategic squad management as he navigates the demands of domestic competitions alongside the approaching Champions League final.
Even with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Torino in Serie A on Sunday, Inter were missing several key figures, including their captain and striker Lautaro Martinez, goalkeeper Yann Sommer, and midfielder Davide Frattesi, all of whom were absent from the starting eleven.
The 49-year-old manager has chosen to rotate his star players to prevent fatigue as they aim for a historic double in Serie A and the Champions League.
“It’s essential to ensure some players get the rest they need after a challenging and lengthy season,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia, as his squad prepares to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on May 31st.
“I don’t expect to have any of the players who missed today’s match back for our upcoming game against Lazio, but we’ll assess the situation ahead of the final match against Como.”
“People often mention that Inter have a smaller squad, but we don’t possess the financial resources of PSG, Manchester City, or Bayern Munich, so our organisation needs to be top-notch.”
“With this determination, we can compete with anyone.”
With Napoli set to play later on Sunday against Genoa, Inzaghi and his side are eagerly waiting to see if they have narrowed the gap to the Serie A leaders, with only two rounds of the season left to play.
“I mentioned prior to the match that, unfortunately, the Scudetto is no longer within our control, but we must continue to play with the same focus as we displayed tonight, giving everything against a team that hadn’t suffered a loss in front of their home crowd.”
“We needed a gritty performance, and that’s exactly what we delivered,” he remarked.
Inzaghi also commended Nicola Zalewski’s contributions during the match, which featured an impressive opening goal stemming from a remarkable solo effort.
“He’s performing exceptionally and possesses significant quality. He initially began as a mezzala (half-winger) but is also capable of playing as a wing-back,” Inzaghi noted.
