Inter Milan are resolute about seeking redemption for their defeat in the 2023 Champions League final, however, manager Simone Inzaghi cautioned on Friday that determination must not morph into obsession when they face Paris St Germain in this year’s decisive encounter.
Despite finishing their domestic season without silverware, Inzaghi and his players are eager to erase the memories of their loss to Manchester City in Istanbul. Nevertheless, they aim to maintain a balanced mindset as they prepare for Saturday’s clash in Munich.
“I’ve observed determination amongst the squad, but not an unhealthy obsession, which we must avoid,” Inzaghi stated when addressing the media.
“What we need is the right focus and determination, and that’s what the players have demonstrated in recent days.
“This week, I’ve emphasised the importance of focus and determination without becoming obsessed; we must prepare with a clear mind and freedom.”
Inzaghi is confident in the experience and capability of his team to execute their strategy effectively on Saturday, putting aside the disappointment of losing the Serie A title to Napoli.
“The psychological aspect is crucial, and we’ve trained in the best manner possible, setting aside our disappointment,” Inzaghi remarked.
“We understand how to prepare for significant matches. We possess world champions and European champions within our ranks.
“We’ve also gained invaluable experience in reaching the Champions League final; it’s a momentous event, akin to a World Cup final or a European Championship final.”
As he approaches this pivotal match, Inzaghi confirmed that his entire squad is fit, including defender Benjamin Pavard, who has returned after missing the semi-final victory over Barcelona and the last four league games.
“All the players are available, and this season, out of 59 matches, we’ve had a full squad for only three games,” Inzaghi explained.
“This instils great confidence in a coach. Having the entire squad fit is more than anyone could wish for; it means you can rely on all players—individuals I take great pride in coaching.”
When asked what his team requires most to overcome Luis Enrique’s PSG, who have claimed every trophy they’ve competed for this season, Inzaghi highlighted key attributes.
“We need aggression, clarity, and perhaps a few more qualities, as winning a match of this significance demands everything,” Inzaghi said.
“It will require every effort, along with meticulous attention to the details we are focusing on, knowing that we face a formidable opponent in PSG, just as we are, and they have a fantastic coach.”
Reflecting on their earlier defeat to City, team captain Lautaro Martinez, who is a World Cup champion and has two Copa America titles under his belt, is excited to add a club achievement to his accolades.
Despite suffering a muscle injury in the first leg of the semi-final against Barcelona, the Argentinian forward expressed confidence in his fitness and believes past experiences will be vital in securing Inter’s first Champions League title in 15 years.
“Finals are won by executing a flawless game and managing all the small details,” Martinez noted.
“It’s a final, so we must remain focused and prepare as best we can, ensuring we’re mentally sharp, rested, and ready for whatever challenges PSG present.
“We respect our opponents, but we know we can exploit their weaknesses. We just need to maintain a positive mindset. I’ve spent several years living and playing in Italy, at a club that has treated me like family. I’m grateful for this journey and thankful for a second chance to compete in a final. We deserve this opportunity due to the sacrifices we have all made together.”
