Inter Milan secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a strong performance against Feyenoord on Tuesday, setting up a clash with Bayern Munich. Manager Simone Inzaghi is eagerly anticipating the encounter, hoping to secure his first victory over the German giants.
Inzaghi has faced Bayern on four occasions during the competition, twice with Inter and twice while at Lazio, but has yet to taste victory in any of those encounters.
However, Inter’s win did come at a cost, as midfielder Kristjan Asllani received a yellow card during the 2-1 second-leg triumph over Feyenoord, resulting in a suspension. Additionally, the team is already grappling with injury concerns affecting Matteo Darmian, Federico Dimarco, Piotr Zielinski, and Nicola Zalewski.
“It will be a challenging match. I’ve faced Bayern with both Inter and Lazio,” Inzaghi shared with Sky Sports in the lead-up to next month’s showdown.
“We’ll approach it as we have done in previous matches. We hope to have all players available, although I regret Asllani’s yellow card.”
“We had two youth players come on, and they’ll contribute as we’re currently a bit short on numbers.”
Inter’s overall advantage over Feyenoord, having secured a 2-0 win in the first leg, allowed Inzaghi to introduce 18-year-old defender Matteo Cocchi and 19-year-old midfielder Thomas Berenbruch for their senior debuts late in the match.
Both players have been part of the Inter squad that triumphed over Bayern to advance to the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals.
“A lot of hard work has gone into this, and they’ve earned this opportunity through their dedication,” Inzaghi remarked.
Additionally, Inter lost defender Stefan de Vrij to injury during warm-ups, paving the way for Dutchman Denzel Dumfries to don the captain’s armband for the first time.
“I’m really proud; it’s a special moment for me. Being captain for the first time at Inter is something I cherish,” Dumfries expressed. “It was a unique evening, but I believe De Vrij will recover quickly; he’s a fantastic player.”
