Injuries have once again put Melbourne Storm star Ryan Papenhuyzen’s availability for the NRL season opener in jeopardy, as revealed by coach Craig Bellamy.
Meanwhile, the exceptional five-eighth Cameron Munster and the lesser-known Nick Meaney are set to play against the Cowboys in a pre-season encounter this Sunday.
“Paps is probably the most uncertain for round one,” Bellamy informed AAP.
“He’s dealing with some issues related to his ankle and knee, and he has endured some significant injuries.”
Papenhuyzen’s career has been hampered by a series of debilitating injuries from 2021 to 2023, including a frightening head injury, a broken kneecap, and a fractured ankle, yet the talented fullback managed to take the field for 20 NRL games last season.

He is aiming to be available for Melbourne’s opening round match against Parramatta, scheduled for March 9 at AAMI Park.
Both Munster and Meaney underwent hip surgery in the off-season but are on course to be ready for round one.
The duo will take the field against the Cowboys in a pre-season fixture at Melbourne’s Casey Fields this Sunday.
“Round one has been the anticipated return date for Cameron and Nick. Both have made excellent recoveries and have been training fully with the team for several weeks now,” Bellamy stated.
“They are fully prepared to play and will get substantial game time on Sunday. While they won’t complete the full 80 minutes, they’ll receive valuable playing time ahead of the season opener.”
