Spanish international Jenni Hermoso (34) declared on Saturday that the distress caused by the unwanted kiss from former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales is finally “over”.
A judge at Spain’s High Court ruled on Thursday that Rubiales was guilty of sexual assault regarding the incident and imposed a fine of 10,800 euros (approximately $11,300) but opted against a prison sentence.
“After everything that has occurred, this will set a significant precedent in a societal context where there is still much work to be done,” Hermoso stated in a post shared on Instagram.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude towards everyone who has stood by me, who are presently with me, and who will continue this battle alongside me.
“And now, yes, it’s over.”
The phrase “it’s over” has become a rallying cry for Hermoso and her teammates in their pursuit of justice following the incident that took place after Spain triumphed in the women’s World Cup in September 2023.
Initially, Rubiales resisted calls to resign from his position as federation president but eventually stepped down amid immense international scrutiny.
On Friday, the footballer’s lawyer, Angel Chavarria, informed AFP of his intention to appeal the ruling, as prosecutors had been seeking a prison sentence of two and a half years for Rubiales.
Rubiales was also exonerated of coercion charges for allegedly attempting to pressure Hermoso into claiming that the kiss was consensual.
Following the verdict, Rubiales announced his plans to appeal the decision.
