Borussia Dortmund narrowed the gap to the Bundesliga’s top four to just seven points after thrashing Union Berlin 6-0 at Signal Iduna Park, with Serhou Guirassy netting an impressive four goals.
Having managed only one victory in their last six outings, Die Schwarzgelben could not afford to slip up, particularly against a Union Berlin side that had suffered defeats in all five of their previous league encounters with BVB at home.
Union did have the first chance of the match, with Danilho Doekhi heading over from close range within the opening five minutes, but it was Dortmund who dominated the first half.
Their breakthrough came midway through the first half, albeit with a touch of good fortune as Julian Ryerson’s low shot, which was heading wide, deflected off Diego Leite and looped over Frederik Ronnow to find the net.
Shortly after, Pascal Gross came close, striking the crossbar from a close distance as the hosts continued to push for more. Although Benedict Hollerbach did test Gregor Kobel, Dortmund were comfortably ahead at half-time with a 2-0 lead.
Gross was instrumental in the second goal, delivering a pinpoint cross that Guirassy headed home, marking his 20th goal across all competitions this season.

In the second half, Dortmund asserted their dominance and almost added to their tally when Guirassy shot narrowly over the crossbar.
Maximilian Beier forced a straightforward save from Ronnow before missing a clear-cut chance at the back post, while Gross kept the Union goalkeeper busy with some good efforts.
Karim Adeyemi then struck the base of the post just before Guirassy scored his second, thumping the ball into the roof of the net from close range to effectively seal the match.
The former VfB Stuttgart striker then completed his hat-trick, tapping in from almost on the goalline following a pass from Beier.
Union struggled to create any opportunities in response, unsurprisingly as they rank as the second-lowest goalscorers in this season’s Bundesliga.
Things went from bad to worse for them as Guirassy added yet another to his tally, scoring with a header from a Gross cross.
Beier capped off the scoring, getting on the scoresheet with yet another assist from Gross.
This heavy defeat leaves Union ten points clear of the automatic relegation spots, and nine above the relegation play-off zone. For Dortmund, they bounce back from two consecutive losses and achieve a second clean sheet in a row.
