Nico Gonzalez’s debut for Manchester City was cut short to just 22 minutes due to injury during the team’s 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient in the FA Cup on Saturday.
The midfielder was thrown into a tough introduction to English football as City scraped through to the fourth round, casting doubt on his availability for their upcoming Champions League match against Real Madrid on Tuesday.
City splashed out £50 million (approximately $62 million) to sign the Spaniard from Porto, hoping to fill the void left by the long-term injury to Rodri.
“I think Nico quickly realised what English football is all about and how the referees operate,” Guardiola remarked. “I understand that without VAR it becomes more challenging because they’re not accustomed to it, but there were a couple of incidents.”
“It’s unfortunate because I can’t say how serious the injury is, but he was unable to continue.”
Guardiola faced jeers from the Orient fans while his team was momentarily behind, but he must have felt a surge of relief as substitute Kevin de Bruyne netted a late goal to secure the win.
“Aside from the first 10 minutes, we played exceptionally well. It’s impossible to fully control the game,” Guardiola stated.
“This is my ninth season in England, and I’ve played numerous times in this remarkable competition. The energy and atmosphere from the crowd is something you won’t experience anywhere else.”
“The atmosphere was absolutely electrifying, even when they were chanting ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’!”
